When I think about, "extending the meaning of culture," I'd like to expand the meaning by comparing it to individual's lifestyles. Except, here I need a craft. Though I think abstractly your lifestyle is your own craft, I'll choose a more explicit and definied craft. Before I start I want to point out while I'm writing I'm using a dictionary which is coincidental since this section talks about what exactly definitions are. I've always used a dictionary as I write since as far back as I can remember, and it's just here recently I haven't been embarrassed about it. I hardly notice anymore that I use it, but this exercise makes me very aware.
Culture is expressed and interpreted drastically differently across generations and civilizations. What immediately comes to mind for me are the Middle Eastern and African tribal dances I see on the Discovery Channel. They are completely unlike anything I've ever seen. They are unique, vivid, and largely expressive. Now I think its important to note this is coming from a young, untraveled, American student, but oddly enough I watch and relate. I love dance. From ballet or any choreographed routine, all the way to two stepping and salsa dancing. Dance is culture. It shows a part of who you are, what you can do, and the things you love. It involves more than movements. It involves your style, attitude, outlook, skill, and personality. I seem to be unconsciously relating back to lifestyle. Dance as culture has a classical, non-changing aspect deep routed in tradition, but also continually changes with every person who embraces or denounces it. Dance comes in several different and distinctive forms just as individuals do along with their culture. Dance is hard to demonstrate in words if you've never seen it for yourself. Hopefully you've tried it. I strongly believe dance and culture can almost even be used interchangeably. The art of dance and the spirit of culture will undoubtedly never die.
